The vineyard and the wine

caixSituated in the Luzech Commune 20km downstream from Cahors the Chateau existed in the 14th century under military control, on the banks of the river Lot and the plains of Caix and Parnac.

The Marquis whose wine was already famous, praised it in these words, “Hope, born out of my culture, a young vine whose branches will one day spread on these slopes and produce wealth and riches. After the revolution of 1789, the Chateau passed to various families before becoming the property of the Danish Royal family in1975.
The Prince Consort's family, the Monpezats, notable in the region, were also producers of famous wines.  He undertook the restoration of the vines, and the winery and cellars were added in 1993.

Situated on a south-facing bend of the river Lot, the vineyard is sheltered from the northerly winds.  It is spread across limestone terraces on the slopes of the hill, leading down to the gravelly river.

Grape varieties : Auxérrois 80%, Merlot 12%, Tannat 8%.

Winemaking and tasting

caix1LThe winery and cellars are in an elegant classical building constructed underground, in keeping with and enhancing the appearance of the Chateau.

The wine begins it development in stainless steel tanks, according to the most modern techniques, maturing in barrels for 18 months. It is aged in ancient cellars, before being offered for sale world-wide.

To quote the poet, Lefranc de Pompignan  “Let us pour the delicate nectar, aged in my barrels, into fragile crystal glasses, which grace my table.”The wine is characterised by its strong colour, full of tannins, full flavoured with the aroma of red berries and a faint truffle flavour.  A strong wine, it goes well with red meats, game and almost all cheeses.

Since 1995, the Chateau de Caix has produced a popular white wine from the grape varieties Semillon Blanc, Sauvignon, Chardonnay.  It is called the Cigarelle de Chateau de Caix.

The cellars of the Chateau may be visited by appointment.
